Latin America is known primarily for its tropical environments throughout history. However, balancing the area’s topography with often forgotten underlying political elements is important when understanding what shapes a place. Dr. Ileana L. Selejan presents “Recursive Archive” as part of the 2024 Ruth K. Franklin Lecture on the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. Selejan, a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, will present her findings on Nicaraguan photography and how documenting the country’s history through still images showcased the aftermath of the Sandinista revolution. Artist and Stanford professor Enrique Chagoya will join her in conversation.
