.The Glass Menagerie in Los Altos

Does life imitate art? Or does art imitate life? Famed Missourian 20th century playwright Tennessee Williams was best when writing about characters, settings and themes taken from his life. After years of obscurity as a writer, Williams was jettisoned to celebrity in 1944 with The Glass Menagerie, a play based on his fragile, mentally unstable sister and histrionic mother. Themes of family, accepting reality as it is and the complex societal and interpersonal workings of gender roles are all at the heart of the play, making it as poignant today as when it was published 80 years ago. The production starts Thursday and continues until February 16.
