Michael Franti got his start in the ’80s with an intense, industrial project, The Beatnigs, which was followed by the critically loved ’90s hip-hop group Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. But things really got cooking in the 2000s under the moniker Michael Franti & Spearhead. He created a sound that married hip-hop, reggae, folk and pop. But above all else, what his fans loved about it was how uplifting the music was. And uplifting the music remains. It’s also political. Franti is an activist who inspires people to be part of something bigger than themselves, and feel good in the process.
