Morrissey is only a subpar artist. Sure, he’s got a great voice. But his best stuff was always with a cowriter. In The Smiths he had Johnny Marr and in his early solo career—which is arguably his best solo period—he had Alain Whyte. While Whyte did return to co-write a couple of songs on Morrissey’s new album, he is mainly known for those ’90s and early 2000s years of Your Arsenal through Years of Refusal. This weekend, Whyte comes to The Ritz to play Your Arsenal in its entirety, along with “hits” which hopefully include Whyte’s “Death of Rock ‘n Roll” song because that’s a certified banger.
