Symphonic World Cup in San Jose

As the Bay Area gears up for the World Cup (a true world series unlike that other one), the San Jose Symphony is hosting its own world tour-de-force. This weekend’s concert features the San Jose premiere of Helios Overture, the symphonic retelling of the myth of Helios by Denmark’s most prominent composer, Carl Nielsen. Then it will bounce to Argentina as the symphony shines a light on Alberto Ginastera’s Harp Concerto, which brings the instrument up from the past and into its rightful place as a solo virtuosity. The night ends in Mother Russia with a defiant piece against Stalin’s tyrannical rule with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. There are shows on Saturday and Sunday.
