Angelique Kidjo at Stanford

Singer. Activist. UNICEF Ambassador. These are just some of the ways to describe the powerhouse TIME magazine called “Africa’s premier diva,” Angelique Kidjo. This multi-Grammy award-winning artist represents the traditional music of her home country, Benin, along with the continent of Africa while keeping it modern with blends of soul, funk, jazz and more. She speaks five languages and sings in all of them across her impressive discography of 18 albums. She also created her own personal language with words like “Batonga.” Oh, she’s campaigned for numerous causes throughout the world, and this year became the first Black African to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. No big deal.
