The award-winning musical Cabaret is emblematic of a story’s journey from obscurity to unparalleled success. It first appeared in novel form as Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. Nearly two decades later, it was adapted into the play I Am a Camera by John Van Druten. Cabaret centers on a Berlin venue called the Kit Kat Club in the twilight of the Jazz Age. As American writer Clifford Bradshaw gets close to cabaret performer Sally Bowles, the Nazis rise to power in the background. It became a Broadway classic in 1966, running for 1,166 performances and scooping up eight Tony Awards. Chock-full of memorable songs, Cabaret was later adapted into the 1972 film of the same name.
