The Freedom of Choice LP (1980) brought the world the wildly popular “Whip it.” Girl U Want is not only a superior song, it has the better video. As Devo became more famous, a lot of the themes of their videos revolved around fame and the manipulation of media. They were one of the first popular rock bands to really parody the absurdity of the rock ’n’ roll image. Sure David Bowie may have made an alien character out of a rock star before them, but Devo’s videos were out-right hilarious jabs. The screaming, devoted fans in the “Girl U Want” video is among their best.
