Dorsey Nunn spent ten years incarcerated in San Quentin; he emerged from prison as a bold radical. His memoir, What Kind of Bird Can’t Fly, chronicles his experience and the lessons he learned along the way. Nunn’s story connects his personal journey to the larger Black Power and Black Lives Matter movements. Today, he’s co-director of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children and co-founder of grassroots organization All of Us or None, the policy and advocacy arm of LSPC. For this event, Nunn will be in conversation with moderator and former Los Angeles Times reporter Lee Romney.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dorsey Nunn whilst touring the former Alcatraz prison, in 2024. I listened to Dorsey’s presentation about his incarceration and his achievements since his release from prison. His book is descriptive, confronting and a deliberate exposure of the harsh differences of the lives of black Americans trying to find equality in life.
