The culture of hip hop encompasses so much more than just the music. There’s art, dance, spoken word and, of course, politics. Hip Hop for Justice is a local grass-roots event that hopes to unite all of these aspects into one afternoon of family friendly entertainment at the Edenvale Community Center in San Jose.
The organizers of Hip Hop for Justice are bringing four Bay Area rap acts to the stage—all with a positive message. They include Dregs One (a highly political rapper from San Francisco), Projekt SEER (a socially conscious South Bay crew), Metafizix (a San Jose duo that spits thoughtful, intelligent words) and IQ (a clever San Jose wordsmith.)
To round out the event, there will be DJs (Malcom Lee and Vex One), spoken word art (AbFact, Marlo Custudio and Lindsey Leong), dance performance (Future Arts Dance Crew), live painting and an open mic (for young would-be rappers). San Jose District 2 Councilman Ash Karla will also give a speech. Open chess tables are available for Wu-inspired gamers.
The organizers hope to not just entertain, but to provide a place for the community to talk about important issues including the death penalty, minimum wage and three-strikes reform. Community organizations include San Jose Peace and Justice Center, San Jose Zulu Nation and San Jose Labor Council, to name a few.
Hip Hop For Justice will be on Sunday 30th from 1pm to 4pm at Edenvale Community Center. Admission is free.
