J Boog makes reggae that feels easygoing without feeling slight, which is harder than it sounds. The songs have that smooth, romantic glide people want from island-pop crossover stuff, but there is enough weight in the grooves to keep it from drifting off into background music. At Mountain Winery, that should play especially well. The room and setting already lend themselves to a softer kind of crowd energy, and J Boog’s whole thing is built for exactly that: melodic, warm, unforced, and just sturdy enough underneath the sweetness to keep the set from floating away.
