New Orleans is the proud home to several important musical traditions. One of those is the second-line brass band, a style that combines music and continuity, sound and celebration. In line (so to speak) with that tradition is Crescent City-based Soul Brass Band. Melding second-line values with funk, the group founded and led by percussionist Derrick “Smoker” Freeman also features Grammy-winning sax man Miles Lyons. Danceable grooves and an irresistible party atmosphere are only part of what makes Soul Brass Band a hit attraction and a treasured exemplar of the unique New Orleans musical culture.
