The Rolling Stones famously sang, “It’s the singer, not the song.” Such is the case with Stella Cole, a young singer who’s brought jazz standards and the Great American Songbook to the age of social media and converted a lot of Gen Z into fans of classical American tunes. It all began when Cole casually posted a video of herself singing “Over the Rainbow,” which went viral. It’s not necessarily the source material that has converted so many of her fans, but her lush tone and natural charm. She has complete control over every aspect of her voice and somehow makes it look effortless.
