When Chai Met Toast, a gentle folk-pop band from Kerala, India, got their start in 2016 and began releasing singles the following year. The group’s accessible and cheery music is sung primarily in English, though more than a dozen singles find lead vocalist Ashwin Gopakumar singing in Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam. At least three of the group’s singles have racked up Spotify plays in excess of 10 million: 2018’s “Khoj (Passing By),” 2018’s “When We Feel Young” and 2021’s “Yellow Paper Daisy.” As a popular festival act in India, the group has its music featured in several Bollywood films.
