The Shins Celebrate 21st Anniversary of First Album

This summer, indie rock giants The Shins are celebrating the 21st birthday of their beloved first album, Oh, Inverted World. James Mercer, the band’s sole constant member since its 1996 inception in Albuquerque, has kept busy with a fruitful music career since the debut album’s release on Sub Pop in 2001. Though the singer-songwriter’s work has evolved in beautiful, ever-intimate directions, those sad yet sweet early-aughts hits like “New Slang” and “Caring Is Creepy” defined an era many will delight in revisiting. An album’s 21st calls for a drink—in this case, something pale blue and tinged with southwestern melancholy.
