408 Collective in San Jose

Conventional wisdom has long held that part of the appeal of the big band format is the almost subliminal communication and interplay among the musicians; the result is a massive sound that seems to come from a single organism composed of many individuals working as a unit. The existence of the 408 Collective demonstrates that those connections can be established and cultivated even when they’re not physically together, as they launched during the lockdown phase of the pandemic. The San Jose-based outfit features four saxes, two trombones, three singers and a full rhythm section. Now free to play together in the same space, the group draws from jazz, funk and R&B to make a wholly original sound.
