In Dave Eggers’ new novel Contrapposto, a boy realizes he can draw, and meets a girl far more brilliant and worldly. When she challenges him to deface a playground together, he agrees. Thus begins a 65-year relationship moving through friendship, working partnership, and love affair. They attend art school together, and though circumstances and affections morph, their commitment to each other and their making of art never does. Contrapposto examines the rules and market forces of the art world, questioning what it means to be allies, and leans deeply into one that allows openness in a world of charlatans.
