At its best, the jam band aesthetic combines elements of rock, jazz, funk, soul and psychedelia. New Jersey band Dogs in a Pile take their name from a Grateful Dead lyric, which is as good an indication as any of their place in the musical landscape. When the group got its start, most members were still in their teens. But a lineup that features three Berklee graduates ensures that Dogs in a Pile bring muscle and chops to the music. The group’s winning vibe builds on musical traditions. The band’s latest album, Distroid, was released last November.
