Burn Brightly in San Jose

“There is not a life in this room that you have not touched.” Those profound words are from the 1995 classic Mr. Holland’s Opus and were delivered to Richard Dreyfuss’ protagonist character at the end of his career by one of his students from years past. Those types of teachers are rare, but it’s safe to say that after 34 years of being the director of Bands & Orchestra at Homestead High School, John Burns is one of those outstanding teachers. This Friday, celebrate his legacy with “Burn Brightly,” his final performance, featuring the debut of Timothy Mahr’s newest composition of the same name, written specifically to honor Burns.
