On their Bandcamp page, San Jose-based band Colonel Macabre describes their sound as “anti-genre.” In one sense, it’s an accurate description, as Colonel Macabre’s sound hovers between multiple disciplines. At the same time, there are traces of established genres in their tender songs. There are echoes of early emo acoustic ballads, shoegaze fuzz, and indie songwriter sentimentality. Whatever the genre or not-genre, Colonel Macabre finds a familiar footing in sonic parts unknown. As for the other bands playing at the Jade Cathay restaurant, Düsol stays firmly in the noise rock space while splicing in surf rock tempos. Little Critter rocks with a fuzzy groove.
