How do a bunch of kids who haven’t yet escaped their teens put out summer cruise-ready soul like this? Thee Heart Tones’ Jazmine Alvarado has a beautiful, emotive voice full of heartbreak and longing. The band keeps it smooth and mellow with a perfect, fluid interplay between guitars and keys. Drummer, Jorge Rodriguez, the only member who can legally buy a beer, holds it all together with the kind of beats that are meant to be swayed to as you hold your dancing partner tight. These are young people who raided their parents’ and even their grandparents’ record collections, and one can’t help but think those parents must be damn proud of the results.
