An inspired synthesis of seemingly unconnected musical styles, the Montreal-based Huu Bac Quintet combines the musical heritage and traditions of China, Vietnam and the South American Andes with textures of contemporary jazz. Multi-instrumentalist Huu Bac plays Chinese fiddle (erhu) and Andean flute (quena) and leads the group is musical exploration that honors his Vietnamese roots, his immersion in Afro-Peruvian musical forms and his deep understanding of jazz. This concert seamlessly highlights the nexus of musical forms for a cross-cultural experience. 2017’s On the Steps of St Paul was Huu Bac’s recorded debut. Work on a second album is well underway.
