Indigenous knowledge systems and newer technologies merge in Inframundo, a speculative world designed by artist and researcher Miguel Novela. Born in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico and currently a lecturer at Stanford University, Novela invites visitors to look inward, and become a rock. He draws on the landscape shaped by cenotes, the natural sinkholes formed by the Chicxulub meteorite impact thought to be portals to the Maya underworld. Using augmented reality, machine learning apparatuses, and rock sculptures, Novela turns these layered terrains into prompts for coexistence with non-human intelligence. Maya cosmology and animal avatars guide our connection with this other. Goes until August 23.
