Kev Choice has the résumé of several musicians crammed into one: pianist, MC, composer, arranger and former musical director for Lauryn Hill. The Oakland artist moves between hip-hop, jazz, soul and classical music without treating any of them like decorative seasoning. With his ensemble, orchestral ambition meets the snap and immediacy of a working band, shifting from intricate piano passages to hard, grounded rhythms without losing the thread. That range should translate beautifully outdoors in St. James Park, where a picnic-friendly afternoon can gradually become something much more focused. Singer-songwriter SōLauren opens this free, all-ages installment of Levitt San Jose’s summer series.
