Those uninitiated to fado are in for the sonic experience of the season this Thursday when guitarist Marta Pereira da Costa takes the Art Boutiki stage. Portugal’s most celebrated musical tradition, fado—when done right—erases the world around listeners with its deeply soulful rhythms and fiery, lyrical tones. As the world’s first and only professional female fado guitarist, Marta Pereira da Costa definitely does the iconic style right. For her only Bay Area performance, she joins forces with jazz pianist Alexandre Diniz to perform new work as well as timeless favorites celebrating famous fadistas of the past.

Addie Mahmassani is a poet based in Santa Cruz. She holds a PhD in American Studies from Rutgers University-Newark and is currently an MFA student in creative writing at San Jose State University. There, she is a Teaching Associate as well as the lead poetry editor of Reed Magazine, California's oldest literary journal. She also surfs, sings and loves a part-sheepdog named Lou.
