At first glance, a classical orchestra and a sea of computers have little in common. Leave it to Stanford University to bridge that gap with its laptop orchestra (SLOrk), a large-scale, computer-mediated ensemble that explores conventional music with unconventional CPU-powered instruments. This humming array of more than 20 repurposed computers, custom multi-channel speakers and meta-instruments is combined to explore new sonic spaces. The Stanford Laptop Orchestra captures the energy of a traditional live music performance and pushes its potential to new heights with creative uses of technology.
