Born at the beginning of the 20th century, Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo is known as one of his country’s most significant composers. In 1939, at the age of 38, Rodrigo’s reputation was solidified with the composition of Concierto de Aranjuez. It has become one of the most recognizable pieces of 20th-century music with its central adagio movement, which was adapted in 1964 by Gil Evans on Miles Davis’ Sketches of Spain. Later in life, he and his wife revealed it was written as a response to the miscarriage of the first child, with its somber melody and heartbreaking tone. This weekend closes out the San Jose Symphony’s season grand finale. Performances on Saturday and Sunday.
