Lynn Nottage is the only female playwright to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice: for the play Ruined in 2009 and Sweat in 2017. The latter, which premiered at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2015 and later on Broadway, takes place in the early 2000s in Reading, Pennsylvania, and revolves around a group of female factory workers struggling to maintain their jobs and friendships as they face strikes, layoffs and unemployment. Nottage, who’s a professor at Columbia University, also received the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship. This production by Palo Alto Players is directed by ShawnJ West. Performances go until June 29.
