Initially formed as a ska club at San Jose State University, Voluntary Hazing has a secret weapon to help make their mark as a ska band: a massive horn section. With two trumpets, two trombones and a whopping three saxophones, the twelve(!)-member ska/pop-punk hybrid can go absolutely wild in their arrangements, both on original songs like “Skemsco” and a prolific array of covers from across the music world. Voluntary Hazing is helping keep the storied canon of San Jose ska acts alive. They pick it up at South San Jose’s Guitar Wars this weekend.
