Known for his versatile and precise guitarwork, William Johnston (half of the band the Anachronistics and a favorite accompanist for several of San Jose’s standout singer-songwriters) finally takes the stage front and center. Johnston performs lead vocals this Friday at the intimate, first-class venue SJZ Break Room. Past SJZ headliner Kira Hooks supports Johnston on vocals, along with Jeff Goodkind on keys, Paychex (Allen Pacheco) on bass, and vocalist Alicia Williams. Johnston’s originals, which draw from Al Green’s folky R&B and Steely Dan’s lyrical wit and rides along traditional Brazilian and Cuban rhythms, promise a delightful night of funk and soul in Johnston’s style.
