Christmas carols hit differently at church, especially one as ornate as the Stanford Memorial Church at the center of campus. This Thursday, the Grammy-winning men’s vocal ensemble Chanticleer brings its legendary annual Christmas show back into the enchanting space. Founded in 1978 in San Francisco, the group got its name from the “clear-singing” rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Its 12 members comprise a vocal orchestra, one that the New York Times calls “as fresh as a blade of grass, tightly focused and keenly expressive.”
