Among the originators of what used to be called heavy metal, British band Deep Purple brought some of the heaviest sounds to FM radio of the ’70s. And they did it with style, paving the way for a host of imitators. Though all of its various permutations, Deep Purple did it best. Classics like “Hush,” “Smoke on the Water” and “Woman from Tokyo” defined an era. Today the group remains vital both on stage (with a lineup that features three key members from its classic era) and on record. Deep Purple’s latest release is 2026’s SPLAT! Kansas opens.
