2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the nation. Despite all of its flaws, it’s still a country that has inspired generations of immigrants from around the world and throughout the centuries, as well as born Americans, to strive for a better life and bigger dreams. Which is exactly what the San Jose Symphony’s “The New World” program is all about. This two-day event (there is a 2:30pm matinee on Sunday) features three unique pieces written by composers inspired by the United States’ potential: Aaron Copland’s “Billy the Kid,” Antonín Dvořák’s “New World Symphony,” and the Bay Area premiere of Jonathan Leshnoff’s “Rhapsody on America,” performed by pianist Joyce Yang.
