Saxophonist Nicole McCabe and bassist Logan Kane are Dolphin Hyperspace. This modern jazz duo from Los Angeles applies values and style from electronica and dance music to their instrumental work, wrapping it all up in a Beat poets-era vibe. Jazz’s tricky time signatures meet the big beats of EDM and the robotic textures of new wave and electroclash. The result: on tracks like “Big Fishy” from the duo’s new Echolocation, it can sound like electronic marching band music. Along with playing upright bass, Kane triggers the tracks. McCabe’s sax helps Dolphin Hyperspace keep at least one foot firmly planted in the jazz world.
