A cross-cultural Halloween weekend keeps the fun rolling into Dia de los Muertos

The spooky season in 2025 just keeps going. Parties were already under way last weekend, and now with the double header of Halloween on Friday and Day of the Dead on Saturday, spirits are high everywhere, with fun for families, parties for grown-ups and Dia de los Muertos ofrendas set up all around the South Bay.

Dia De Los Muertos

Avenida de Altares—Every year, the School of Arts and Culture organizes Avenida de Altares (Avenue of the Altars), a free event celebrating Dia de Los Muertos. This year’s festivities will be heightened with a concert by the Grammy-winning band Ozomatli (see page 8). In addition to perusing the 40 altars that are set up throughout the area, visitors can participate in art activities, find creative work by local artisans at the vendor market, get tarot readings, watch the catrina costume contest, and thrill to the daring feats demonstrated in lucha libre matches. Machu Picchu Gallery Ofrenda—In the spirit of Dia de los Muertos, an ofrenda has been constructed at Machu Picchu Gallery of the Americas by gallery founder Olga Enciso Smith and son Brian M. Smith—a tradition at the gallery since 1986, when the first ofrenda was dedicated to two Latino children and a college student who had died in car accidents.
