For some reason, there are people who can’t get into instrumental music. Even if someone loves words, they’re not always necessary for conveying emotions, ideas and meaning. Music alone is capable of touching the soul and The Westerlies are one example. Formed in Seattle, this brass quartet combines jazz, folk and chamber music to create a rush of emotions floating on beautiful melodies. The Westerlies frequently play protest songs from greats like Woody Guthrie, Joni Mitchell and Robin Holcomb, along with original compositions by the members. In 2021 they wrote This Land composed of music they wrote surrounding America’s mass shootings epidemic with dedication to Sandy Hook and the victims of the Pulse Nightclub.
