The traditional form of Japanese drumming, known as taiko, has existed for thousands of years and is used in religious ceremonies, wars and entertainment. It involves drummers banging on large, wooden barrel-shaped drums in choreographed motions. Every year, a different school hosts this intercollegiate gatheringto promote taiko drumming in the college community and larger audiences; this year, the student group Stanford Taiko does the honors at the Intercollegiate Taiko Invitational Concert. This program features a concert with more than 180 taiko players, including Stanford Taiko, with instructors from San Jose Taiko conducting workshops for students.
