As part of the SoFA district’s First Friday festivities, the ICA hosts Queer American Memorials, an ongoing project that replaces stories of violence with stories of life. Interactive markers are placed at the locations where queer people were murdered from 1999 to 2009, during which Congress debated the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in legislation around federal hate crimes. The ICA location dedicates a community memorial to Alina Marie Barragan, a Latinx trans youth native to San Jose. Installed throughout the gallery are photographs, interactive mapping, and shelves of queer art and books inviting visitors to linger, remember, and contribute their memories.
