Rock ’n’ roll—that most American of musical forms—has thrived in places beyond the U.S. and Great Britain. The band Vopli Vidopliassova got its start in 1986 in Kyiv, Ukraine, when the country was still under Soviet control. They released their debut, Tantsi, in 1989 and have since released nine more albums. The band has been profiled in a volume of the popular 33 1/3 book series, and Tantsi was released in the U.S. for Record Store Day 2023. All proceeds from dates on the band’s current North American tour benefit medical and humanitarian nonprofits working to help Ukraine.
