Halloween comes with considerably more brass this year as the San Jose Metropolitan Band opens its season with Monsters, Machines & Magic. The concert marks Chris Nalls’ debut as the ensemble’s musical director and builds its program around all things spooky, mechanical and generally better suited to October than April. Selections pull from Wicked and The Nightmare Before Christmas, alongside Mary Shelley Meets Frankenstein, Ghost Run and Extraordinary Machines of Clockwork and Steam. It’s a seasonal program without relying entirely on the usual graveyard of Halloween standards, giving the community ensemble plenty of room to make things weird before everyone goes back to respectable holiday music.
