With downcast, dissonant riffs, machine-gun drums and shrieking vocals, Boston-based band New Forms lives up to its “emoviolence” descriptor. Its music has one speed: fast. Not a single song off the band’s album As Dust Collects runs longer than two and a half minutes, and none need to; each is like a perfectly encapsulated sonic assault, disconcerting, heart-racing, yet beguiling in its cacophony. Their esoterically-titled songs capture chaos riding the coattails of rhythmic order. New Forms serves as a suitable headliner for a restaurant venue show replete with screamo, post-screamo and skramz stylings from Chicago-based band Crowning, as well as local acts like Wounded Deer and Broncos at Distance.
