Nuclear war may have been thwarted thus far, but the threat and impact of what was created continues to loom over humanity. Jon Else’s Book Frenchman Flat: The Rise and Fall of Atomic Bombs recounts the stories of those from the 1940s and 1990s who were involved with the development of nuclear weapons alongside the stories of those who suffered the consequences of these weapons and those who supported and were against arms control. In the two decades after Hiroshima there was a scramble to produce more nuclear weapons and a scramble to ban them. Nuclear war has been narrowly missed. Else’s book recounts the current successes and acts as a warning for the future.
